Buffer and Bandwidth Management for the Expedited Forwarding Traffic Class in Differentiated Services Networks

چکیده
This paper addresses issues related to buffer and bandwidth management for the Expedited Forwarding (EF) traffic class in IP Differentiated Services (DiffServ) networks. We are concerned with edge nodes connecting a number of end-users with premium traffic contracts to the core network and we examine buffer requirements in those nodes. Our results suggest that even in the case of EF traffic class, an amount buffering is essential to provide certain levels of Bit Error Rate (BER) while achieving good utilisation of the existing bandwidth resources; this is in contrast to the current belief that a buffer size of 1 or 2 packets should be enough for the EF traffic class.

Effect of Higher Priority EF Traffic on TCP Throughput and Fairness
In this paper, we study the effect on TCP of assigning higher-priority to traffic requesting Expedited Forwarding (EF) service in a Differentiated Services network. We analyze networks in which (1) EF traffic occupies different fractions of link bandwidth and is bursty at different time-scales; and (2) multiple TCP flows with heterogeneous round trip times share the network with the EF traffic....
متن کاملMeasuring Quality of Service in a Differentiated Services Domain with Linux
We have developed an independent test-bed of Linux based soft routers on which experiments have been conducted to measure Quality of Service in a Differentiated Services domain. This paper presents the first stage of an ongoing research effort on resource management mechanisms for next-generation networks. Our current results show proof-of-concept scenarios demonstrating how Differentiated Serv...
متن کاملCluster Based Cross Layer Intelligent Service Discovery for Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks
The ability to discover services in Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is a major prerequisite. Cluster basedcross layer intelligent service discovery for MANET (CBISD) is cluster based architecture, caching ofsemantic details of services and intelligent forwarding using network layer mechanisms. The cluster basedarchitecture using semantic knowledge provides scalability and accuracy. Also, the mini...
متن کاملA Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) for Capacity-Admitted Traffic
This document requests one Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) from the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) for a class of real-time traffic. This traffic class conforms to the Expedited Forwarding Per-Hop Behavior. This traffic is also admitted by the network using a Call Admission Control (CAC) procedure involving authentication, authorization, and capacity admission. This differ...
متن کاملA Generic Traffic Conditioning Model for Differentiated Services
Differentiated service (Diffserv) is a set of technologies used to enable the provisioning of class-based, differentiated quality of service. One of the essential building blocks to realize Diffserv is the use of traffic conditioning mechanisms to support the required forwarding behavior. In this paper, a generic model for traffic conditioning is proposed. The generic traffic conditioner (GTC) ...
